In Vogue Now

According to Carrie Bradshaw, one of the biggest fictional fashion icons of all time, “Every year the women of New York leave the past behind and look forward to the future... this is known as Fashion Week." Although the shows ended two weeks ago, it is still in our minds (and hearts). While the catwalks were showing us what is going to be in trend for the next spring/summer, outside the tents, captivating ensembles of girls and guys from across the industry showed us what is in vogue now.

Fashion Week Part 1

We have been busy bees at MBF covering event after event during New York Fashion Week, from off-site venues to the tents at Lincoln Center. To name a few, we covered Nolcha Fashion Week, the Angola International Fashion Show, the Snowman Runway Presentation, and even went inside the tents to see Custo Barcelona hit the catwalk. We also attended off-site events such as Manufacturer New York’s Second Anniversary Bash, the Refinery29 Country Club, and Christian Siriano’s fragrance launch party.

At 17 and self-taught, the Houston based designer Amir Taghi made his debut at New York Fashion Week this season with a collection inspired by fierce women chasing after their dreams. He name dropped icons like Bianca Jagger, who was known for her signature low cut suits that were the perfect combination of sexy and elegant. Overall, his designs reflect his Persian background and emit an unapologetic sense of sophisticated luxury which is so consistent with the chic southern style he surrounds himself with.

photo via Carrie Hammer

Carrie Hammer creates customized business dresses for the modern woman and what better way to empower her collection than to have real life professionals strutting down the catwalk? Replacing runway models with role models, Carrie is making a major statement by equating beauty with success. Held at The Fashion Law Institute, this year's diverse lineup included the likes of top female executives from Shoppable, The Li.st, Amazon, Intuit, Fast Company, Apple, and both Geena Rocero a transgender model as well as Karen Crespo, a quadruple amputee who walked the runway for the first time with her new limbs.

We came across the swimwear line Feelo'je at the Angola International Fashion Show who's tropical palette and Caribbean vibes brought together a striking collection of bold bikinis inspired by the sunset. The designer Janay, who officially launched her label at age 17, came up with the name Feelo'je to pay homage to her hometown and merge it with her "feel" for fashion.

Another noteworthy designer at the Angola Fashion Show was Lucrecia Moreira who blends African, European and American cultures into one cohesive line. This collection in particular was inspired by the Mao collar but reinterpreted and applied to dresses of varying lengths and cuts.

NAMM also known as "New Age of Money Makers" is a cool menswear label that draws inspiration from modern art, architecture, and represents a team of ambitious 20-something Millennials. Shown at Manufacturer New York, designer Ron Wallace is working as the first incubator for the new initiative, which has really helped mature his aesthetic and grow as a designer. The collection is credited for it's fine tune details and is looking to expand to a bigger show and larger venue next year, possibly even in Paris.

Portuguese designer Katty Xiomara who is known for her graphic themes, strayed a bit from last season's geometrics and color blocking, and introduced a focus on the structure behind the geometrics. Shown at Nolcha Fashion Week, the clothing had a lighter, softer, more transparent take for summer and with the label's popularity quickly gaining momentum, she's definitely one to keep an eye on!

Also spotted at the independent fashion show Nolcha was the contemporary lifestyle brand, Charles & Ron. The self-taught couple created the collection by transforming photographs from their capital city of Malta into a captivating display of prints. Overall, the brand is deeply rooted in their Maltese culture and truly symbolizes the spirit of the Mediterranean.

photo via Refinery29

This season Refinery29 really made a splash at NYFW and introduced their interactive Country Club pop-up concept down on Mercer Street in SoHo. Here fashionistas were able to take a break from all the Fashion Week madness and enjoy snacks and refreshments as well as a nine-hole mini golf experience inspired by different designers like Suno and Marc Jacobs.

photo via Refinery29

Refinery29 also teamed up with Lord and Taylor to present The New Class of Designers showcase called Brand Assembly. Together, they produced a runway show featuring advanced contemporary designers which included the likes of Sachin + Babi, Priority Ten, and Calla. Right now these up and coming labels are available to shop at the Brand Assembly concept shop both online and at the Fifth Avenue flagship.

And lastly one of our favorite Fashion Week events was the Cara x Mulberry Scavenger Hunt. With the help of Refinery29, about 30 girls were stationed throughout the city on bikes giving away custom totes filled with keys. Out of all these giveaways, only three lucky keys, each at one Mulberry location across New York, were actually able to unlock the padlocks holding a handbag from Cara's new Mulberry collection. One of our team members was able to track down the Refinery29 girls and get a key, but unfortunately it did not unlock the case holding the handbag turned backpack. However, it was definitely some good old fashionable fun!

Please check our Facebook and Instagram for great street style pics from all these events during New York Fashion Week.

This is part one, stay tuned to part 2 to be posted soon!

AMP3 Press Day

Last week we had the pleasure of attending AMP3 PR's Press Day, featuring five amazing brands to watch out for this fall. Sponsored by Zico Coconut Water, Energems chocolate energy, Pretzel Crisps, and Probelle nail polish, the showcase was full of good vibes, trendy clothing, and highlighted Fall 2014 collections from Bela Criacao, Citizen Ciao, SNOWMAN New York, NOMAD by Tess Johnson, and Cat Footwear.

With a love affair for the bright and colorful, Bela Criacao is a South American brand designed for curvy shapes and offers key transitional pieces that women can wear from the office to an evening out. In Portuguese, the label literally means "beautiful creations," and is made right here in Manhattan. Focusing on fit, fabric, quality, and construction, Bela Criacao presented their Holiday 2014 and Spring 2015 lines, which both embody seamlessly sexy and confident staples essential to any woman's wardrobe. Currently, the fashion label is available online via their website as well as at a few select boutiques across the country.

Citizen Ciao is a new cutting-edge streetwear brand for both men and women whose mission is to give back to people around the world. Inspired by Southern California surf culture, this multicultural lifestyle label infuses an urban attitude with eye-catching graphics and donates part of its profits to the organization Project Hope Alliance, which aims to end the cycle of poverty through education and family stability. The name, Citizen Ciao, was born from the idea that people should be respectful of one another and say Hello and Goodbye to each other, which is what "Ciao" translates to in Italian. Their tagline, "the new surf," reflects their desire to remain inline with surfing culture but mix it up with floral, stripe, and text designs. To check out more of the label, click here.

The NYC based outerwear company, SNOWMAN New York is known for their signature high quality, light-weight down jackets. By keeping what makes New Yorkers "tick" in mind, the label reflects the vibrancy and energy of New York with their Fall/Winter collection inspired specifically by 42nd Street. For Spring, their range will include trench coats and rain jackets in a lighter range of vibrant yellows, purples, oranges, and blues. Right now you can shop them online or across the city at Equinox shops.

NY Trade Show Roundup Fall/Winter 2015-16

The close of July is considered one of the busiest times of the year as the industry gets color, fabric, and print frenzied over all the trade shows happening across town. So if you didn't get to make it to Premiére Vision, Indigo, or Texworld, we've got all the latest must-know innovations so you can keep up to date with what's happening in the market.

photo via Lamar

Held at a new, spacious location at Pier 92, Premiére Vision was our first stop and a bit off the beaten path, but totally worth the trek. While the Trend Forum was smaller than previous years, the layout of the show was much more organic and created a flow from accessories to the Forum, to vendors, and finally Indigo. The Trend Forum confirmed our key color predictions for F/W 2015-16 with blues, oranges, and darker tones prevailing across the spectrum. Here, we came across Lamar, who exclusively produces the technical fabrics "Nilit Heat," lining that captures body heat and insulates as well as "Nilit Breeze," which is used for windbreakers.

While Indigo mimicked many of the same themes we saw at PV, a fresh set of textile companies graced the roster. The first, Camilla Frances Prints is based in London and newbies to the Indigo scene, but definitely offered an unforgettable selection of designs from blurred florals to ethnic tapestry prints to galactic, landscapes, and graphics. With most of their collection placed on darker grounds and in more complex placements, botanicals, floral and geometric combos, and black and white prints were in the most demand.

Located at a booth featuring independent designers, we were introduced to Silvia Maria, a Brazilian design studio that showcased at Indigo for the first time as well. Through an intense mix of colors inspired by Brazilian life, the collection included a plethora of lively prints, mixed patterns of animal and florals, and overlapping designs. One of her prints was even chosen to be included in Indigo's website gallery of wallpapers and is available for download here.

We've already updated you about our discussion at TexworldUSA so now it's time to tell you about the most relevant trends exhibited at their Trend Forum. Overall, there was an abundance of texture, shimmer, sparkle, cutouts, and of course embossing. Shimmery yarns created a tapestry-like sensation in conjunction with iridescent details, sequins, and glittery bouclé. Navy took center stage on its own as well as in various combinations with nudes and yellows. However, the main focus resided in performance fabrics like scuba materials.

photo via Hyperbola

It seems like everyone is after fabrics that offer the newest technology, which is why we have to highlight the forward thinking company, Hyperbola. With a focus on outerwear, Hyperbola combines fashion and function that can fit into everyone's lifestyle. While they currently work with major retailers like Puma and Zara, they feel the merging of fashion and function hasn't necessarily trickled across from athletic wear. The Taiwan based company has already won awards for their 100% performance wool ski jacket which is almost identical to a classy tuxedo jacket. This jacket is not only stylish and lightweight, but waterproof, breathable, highly durable, water repellent, windproof, and super warm.

So what's our forecast for F/W 2015-16? Color palettes will shift towards a blue story ranging from icy to dusty to midnight hues with hints of teal. On the fabric front, it's all about performance features and technology so expect scuba-like materials to stick around. 3D effects were prevalent as in embossed textures, pleating and lace. Double faced fabrics as in sportswear inspired synthetic performance fabrics combined with traditional wool.Shimmer and sparkly embellishments are also keen to pop up, but mostly in yarn form for both knits and wovens. Digital prints, geometrics, and diffused floral patterns with dark backgrounds will be everywhere, proving spring themes can easily translate into fall fashion. Overall, we are looking at a growing relationship between fashion and function and a way to not only merge the two, but create clothing that can handle practically anything.

Capsule NY SS15 Recap

The two-day long men’s show, Capsule, concluded last week after a showing of over 700 designers, including a mix of new independents and big names in the business. The event took place on the southern tip of Manhattan, in Basketball City. This great, open arena produced a laid back atmosphere, and mimicked the feel of the menswear products presented in the show. Capsule was all about casual convenience, even offering shuttles from Lafayette and back, discounted Uber rides, and access to an outdoor terrace with stunning views of the Brooklyn Bridge.

photo via Capsule

Since the show began in 2007, it has grown from only 45 designers, to well over 700 as of this year. Even with so many designers at the SS15 show, there seemed to be an overriding theme – an understated sophistication that left us with the feeling that our lives are serious enough, and fashion doesn’t need to be. This West Coast, vintage inspired vibe embraced Hawaiin prints, short-sleeved button downs, and even the bucket hat! As an overall, we saw soft tailored pieces with a sportswear attitude – predominant colors of earthy tones ranging from moss green, dark greys, caramel and navy, with pops of color like yellow, orange and teal. If you haven’t already, invest in navy pieces for Spring/Summer 2015, because it is going to be huge!

Capsule was able to show a little bit of everything in men’s fashion. Overall, we saw brands not just selling clothing, but a lifestyle.

Iron & Resin, a California brand, based its designs around the surf lifestyle, while brands like Timberland focused on performance wear for men, showing breathable button downs in natural colors, Cordura shorts, and Hyvent Jackets – technology designed by their sister brand The North Face.

Japanese Company, A. Four from designer Kazuki Kuraishi, focused on minimalism, representative of the culture and enlisted the help of graphic designer, Lucas Price for a line of graphic tees previewed here.

Goodlinens, a new bath and kitchen towel brand, set to launch later this year displayed towels made from natural fibers out of flax pants and naturally colored.

Herschel Supply Co. showed off their line of wearable storage in coordinating colors, introducing a new salmon pink to the collection.

Men’s lifestyle and fashion mags like Cereal and Man of the World featured men’s street style and photography from around the world.

photo via Arpenteur

One design team that embodied the vibe of the show was Arpenteur, who were first timers to Capsule NYC. Arpenteur was created 3 years ago by two Frenchmen who took on making wearable and sustainable clothing – everything from raincoats made from the same material as sails, to a collection of knits from the same heather grey yarn. There is ease to the collection that clearly reflects the personalities of the creators and cartoons they watched as kids inspire the simple colors and lines.

photo via Men in Cities

And then there was Men in Cities a lifestyle and accessories brand based out of New York City, with an innovative take on selling to men. Men in Cities does all the work for you! They have created boxes inspired by different cities across the world that are filled with products that embody that location. For example, Men in New York would get gloves while the man in Paris may get a paisley print pocket square.

photo via Meg Company

Meg Company had one of the most exciting displays at Capsule, with everything from hats to men’s apparel and shoes…tons of shoes! Meg Company is ahead of the game when it comes to footwear for men with their camo print loafers, open toe lace-up sandals, and leopard print sneakers – all trends that we are only starting to see in men’s street style. Meg Companies practices in sustainability and quickly won us over. They make jackets from old US Army tents and use natural dying methods in the process.

Overall, Capsule was an amazing show filled with innovation and refinement – a move from serious to easy going is in store for Spring/Summer 2015 and we can't wait!

With 3D printing all over the news, Nike has revealed the first three-dimensionally printed performance bag. Entitled the "Rebento," and made exclusively for soccer stars Neymar Jr., Wayne Rooney, and Cristiano Ronaldo for the FIFA World Cup, only three copies were produced. The highly customized duffel is made of a flexible flyknit material and comes with a laser-sintered nylon base, leather top, and custom gold hardware engraved with each player's name.

What if you could actually wear all your ingenious filtered Instagram snaps? Adidas recently announced that they will be launching an app allowing owners of ZX Flux shoes to create patterns based on photos from the visually-focused mobile platform. The "miadidas" photo print app is expected to hit iPhones and Androids this August and represents the capabilities of customization as well as the merging of online and offline worlds.

The future is looking quite fashionable for Google Glass with the help of the iconic fashion designer, Diane von Furstenberg. Together, the two have designed five new frames and eight new shades available online starting June 23rd. The collection, "DVF Made for Glass," will retail at both Google and Net-a-Porter, where it will be sold as a $1700 prepackaged set that "includes Glass, a DVF optical frame, a sunglass style, a mono earbud and a case."

We've got some great news for all you bike enthusiasts out there with the launch of a new folding helmet called "Morpher." You can now ride safer, easier, and without the hassle of carrying around a bulky helmet all day long. This revolutionary technology is made of the same materials as any standard one, but can fold to a mere thickness of 1.4 inches and perfect for packing into any handbag.

Australia's Tzukuri has developed a handmade, solar-powered sunglass range so you'll never lose your sunnies again. These frames come in six different designs, three sizes, and contain a tiny chip and solar charger that connects to your iPhone via bluetooth. If you happen to leave a pair behind, the app sends you notifications until you're up to 15m away and incase you make it farther, it secures the last location you had them on a map.

It's pretty clear that in today's day and age our phones have become essential accessories in our day to day lives, with most of us practically suffering separation anxiety when parted from our flashy touchscreens. Samsung, Google, HTC, iPhone, and soon enough, Amazon will be launching their very own smartphone. While many rumors have surfaced concerning the device's specs, budget price point, and innovative 3D features, nothing has yet to be confirmed. Amazon has scheduled a launch event of some kind for June 18 and we're crossing our fingers that a prototype of the phone will finally be released.

Brazil's Fashion Kickoff

With the FIFA World Cup set to kickoff one week from today, much like the rest of the world, the fashion industry's got Brazil on the brain. Everyone from Forever 21 to Valentino has released soccer themed limited edition products in light of one of the world's most anticipated sporting events of 2014. Amidst all the buzz, we'd like to highlight the coolest, most innovative fashion collaborations and events surrounding the diverse culture of soccer-crazed Brazil.

photo via Freshness

If anyone knows how to do sportswear with style, it's Adidas Originals. This time, collaborating with native Brazilian brand, Farm, the two have joined forces to pay tribute to this year's World Cup destination of choice by combining their signature traits. Adidas' trademark three-striped garments are complimented with the lively flora and fauna prints of Farm, to produce an energetic collection of tank tops, track suits, bags, and sneakers inspired by the local indigenious plant life of Brazil.

photo via Fashion One

Puma's got their eye on the ball as well with the launch of a sneaker collection with the creative direction of the lovely, Solange Knowles. The collaboration, "Girls of Blaze Disc Collection," includes four versions of Puma's Disc Blaze shoe, designed by up and coming designers and photographed and styled by Solange herself. The shoe line was released exclusively at Opening Ceremony and is now available at Rime, Revolve, American Rag, Fred Segal, and Nordstrom.

To give the World Cup games a fashionable twist, Yoox.com has teamed up with Sepp magazine to create a range of neat sweaters supporting various international designers' home countries. The 10 piece collection, #YooxSoccerCouture is available now and has enlisted the likes of Duro Olowu of Nigeria for Africa, Damir Doma for Germany,  Ksubi for Australia, MSGM for Italy, Juun.J for Korea, Masha Ma for China, Agatha Ruiz de la Prada for Spain, Ami for France, Barbara Casasola for Brazil, and of course the beloved Opening Ceremony for the USA.

If you are in/or around the NYC area this July make sure to stop by Brasil Summerfest held at various locations around the city. The weeklong festival is the largest music and arts event outside of Brazil, focusing on the country's vibrant culture by showcasing traditional to contemporary styles of music, art, and film.

So to get you in the spirit, today we'll leave you with this year's favored World Cup anthem by the Colombian pop artist, Shakira. Enjoy!

Two Names Are Better Than One

It seems to be the season for fashion collaborations as brands from high to low seek a high profile name to pair up with. The idea of bringing luxury labels and celebrity designed wardrobes to the masses has become practically the norm in the eye of retail and it's not changing anytime soon. So get your agendas ready because these are some fashion collabs your wardrobe will not want to miss.

photo via Elle

Kate Moss x Topshop
She did it again! After 4 years, Kate Moss has returned for yet another collaboration with the fast fashion retailer Topshop, and this time it's shoppable in 39 countries worldwide as well as in Nordstrom stores, Nordstrom.com, and Net-a-Porter.com. The collection ranges from $76 to $1,200 and most of it adorned with fun details like beading, fringe, and sequins so you can get your statement Kate Moss on. As expected last week's launch at Topshop's Oxford Circus drew in enormous crowds and of course London's A-list ladies which included Cara Delevingne, Suki Waterhouse, Sienna Miller, and Naomi Campbell at a private after party event.

photo via Vanity Fair

Proenza Schouler x MAC
Fashion and makeup go together like well, designers Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough. Available now, this makeup range emulates Proenza Schouler's bold clothing and iconic prints with a super vibrant colour palette of lipsticks and blushes that pair with dark eyeliners and dramatic nail polishes. The collection is all about being effortless and balances beauty with fashion in the most downtown cool of ways. All those in favor of looking like a Proenza girl, say yay!

Banana Republic x Marimekko
Earlier this year, Banana Republic announced a collaboration with Finnish designer Marimekko and lucky for us the first sneak peek of the 22-piece collection is finally here. Arriving in stores on May 22, this limited edition capsule is full of Marimekko's artistic prints that grace the likes of signature Banana silhouettes like midi skirts, cropped skinny pants, maxi dresses, tunics, rompers, and other separates. Full of uniquely patterned pieces that will surely stand out from the rest of your wardrobe, you may just have found your summer statements.

photo via fashionista.com

Karlie Kloss x Warby Parker
Although the capsule collection doesn't launch until June 10th, Karlie has already been building major buzz by wearing the 70's inspired sunnies around NYC with bestie Taylor Switft. The sunglass range includes three metal frames with ombre lenses and all sales of the $145 specs benefit the nonprofit Edible Schoolyard NYC, which encourages healthy eating for kids in low income public schools.

CFDA and Amazon
In further efforts toward world domination, Amazon's MyHabit private sale website will now host an online designer shop to benefit the CFDA foundation. Starting this July, fashionistas alike will be able to shop their favorite designers at a discount AND contribute to a good cause with all proceeds going towards disaster relief, HIV/AIDS and breast cancer charities. So far, everyone from Tommy Hilfiger, Ralph Lauren, and Michael Kors to Marc Jacobs, Alexander Wang, Tory Burch and Oscar de la Renta, among many others, have already joined the initiative.

photo via telegraph.co.uk

After confirming a long term partnership with Pharrell Williams, Adidas Originals has announced a another capsule collection with the famed London Fashion Designer, Mary Katrantzou, set to hit stores this November. Katrantzou is best known for her eye popping use of colour and digital kaleidoscope-esq patterns which we're hoping will translate into the exclusive sporty apparel and footwear line.

photo via Alexander Wang

Alexander Wang x H&M
This highly anticipated collection is definitely one to mark your calendars for. H&M's latest designer collaboration was announced just two weeks ago via Wang's Instagram account drawing in over 11K in likes. The collection which will include men's and women's clothing as well as accessories is set to launch in early November and will be available in over 250 H&M stores worldwide. According to Wang, H&M is very open to "pushing boundaries" so we can't wait to see what the two masterminds come up with!

Off-Site On Trend: Part II

This year we attended two leading independent designer showcases held during NYFW that help a new array of global talent break into the industry. Held by RUSK, Nolcha Fashion Week was presented on Pier 59 with more than 30 designers in womenswear, menswear, and accessories exhibiting.

photo via Katty Xiomara

A combination of sophistication, femininity, and an eye for fabrics has led to the evolution of Katty Xiomara. With Portuguese decent and a love for the nostalgic, she has created a poetic and idyllic character for the modern woman's wardrobe. Her latest collection was inspired by the popular Sunday comic, Peanuts. Through the usage of graphic details and free hand drawings, she evokes the personalities of Snoopy, Charlie Brown, and the like, to transform us to the fun days of our youth.

photo via Jessica Frankl

As we mentioned last week, we also attended Launch NY to see the Bow & Drape x Paper Fashion collection. Bow & Drape is a label dedicated to building confidence among women through their personalized approach to clothing. The brand channels your inner Molly Ringwald meets Judd Nelson and is all about creating feminine pieces that radiate a bit of attitude. Their collaboration Watercolor Artist Katie Rodgers of Paper Fashion created two custom prints, a spatial floral and a lipstick conversation print.

photo via Danielle Meder

Not only have we seen such a surge in new emerging talent but there has also been a fresh update to the audience as well. What once was limited to only the most prestigious editors and buyers has evolved to a guest list of "it" girls, celebrities, and bloggers. The most recent shows have even come to include everything from streetwear photographers to illustrators to gif artists like the bloggers Tumblr sent to fashion week or the infamous Live Runway Visionaire Danielle Meder

Fit For Good

Technology has enabled custom made clothing to finally reach the mass market. It's tough enough getting something properly tailored let alone buying something straight off the rack at a department store. Therefore, many shoppers completely skip both scenarios and head straight to the web to find custom made pieces that are more convenient for their lifestyles. Due to this growing demand, a string of new brands has emerged as an antidote to fast fashion and to give the industry a fresh perspective on fit and size, particularly in the menswear sector.

photo via NY Times

Between regular fits and big & tall sizes, one would think you should fit somewhere in between, but what about those of a smaller build? Meet Peter Manning, a line of classic American Sportswear made for guys 5-foot-8 and under and of a thinner physique. Along with this, other similar brands like Jaden Lam and Willis & Walker have popped up to cater to this niche market as well.

video via Ori Jeans

We all can agree that the one item that is the most frustrating to shop is without a doubt jeans. While it may sound unreal, that's where Ori Jeans comes in with their $99 handcrafted jeans. Made with selvedge denim from the US and Japanese mills, this Kickstarter campaign will start taking orders sometime this month and once it's up and running, you'll be able to select a specific cut, color, fabric, and even such details as stitching and distressing.

photo via Appalatch

Based in Asheville NC, Appalatch is an ethically minded, American made, and quality driven outdoor apparel company that seeks to prolong the lifeline of what we wear. Their custom sweaters are 3D printed in under an hour with no waste and cost around $109.

video via MyOwnShirts

MyOwnShirts is like a virtual design mecca for shirts. With the click of a button you can enter your measurements, choose your fit and design preferences, and voila! Your shirt is cut, sewn, and delivered to your door.

photo via Indochino

One of the most well known of these companies and first of its kind is Indochino, an online made-to-order suit retailer where you choose a style, add customizations and then follow their step by step measuring guides to create a look completely your own. They even have pop up tailor shops in major cities across the US and are so dedicated to creating the perfect fit that if your suit arrives and isn't right, they will even go as far as covering additional alteration expenses, remaking it free of cost, or accepting a return with full refund. Today, Indochino has served more than 120,000 customers in over 130 countries and continues to go global.

photo via fashionista.com

Womenswear label Bow & Drape is a NY fashion tech startup who not only does customized unique statement pieces but as of late has been experimenting with 3D printing for its new accessory line. Stay tuned next week as we talk about the NYFW presentation Bow & Drape x Paper Fashion at Launch NY.

NY Tradeshow Roundup Spring/Summer 2015

Despite the winter storms and dropping temperatures, we made it to all the apparel fabric tradeshows here in NY. This year we did not only confirm the seasonal colours and fabric trends but we sought after the most innovative fabrics that meet our demand for comfort in our ever evolving lifestyles.

Premier Vision NY and Indigo are the first to open up each season for fabric trade shows worldwide, which gives us a great advantage point. This Spring Summer ‘15 show offered a broad selection of exhibitors showcasing their latest designs and styles to a large customer base which generated a steady flow of attendees.

The most predominant colours were shades of blue tones including everything from indigo, cobalt, and mint to light blue with a continuation into greens of sea foam, teal, and moss. Yellow ranged from citrus to soft pastel shades to a warm mimosa yellow. Candy colours continued to be strong in pale and muted tones along with natural colours which all enhances the brights.

Femininity rules in transparent fabrics, delicate constructed laces, eyelet, tulles and webbed like elements, sheers, transparency effects, sheens, sparkles, pearlescent sheens across knits and wovens. In prints we saw tribal, flowers from dense to open designs, watercolour influences, tropicals, fresh vertical stripes (mostly in knits), textured fabrics in either graphic, linear or circular patterns, and mostly tone on tones to offset the feminine mood. Sportswear fabrics were key in neoprene, nylons, scuba materials, mesh, imprinted, and embossed.

Our picks for the most innovative exhibitors are:

Based in Japan, Mitsubishi Rayon Group is the sole manufacturer of tri-acetate fibre Soalon ™ which provides water absorbency, quick dry, and lightweight properties to womenswear. With these fibres, garments can be machine washed on gentle cycle and ironed. So far such well known brands like Balenciaga, Lanvin, Haute Hippe, DVF, Tori Burch, Tara Jarmon, Miu Miu, Max Mara, and Banana Republic are already working with Soalon.

Established in Istanbul in 1970 with a mere two weaving looms, Ozdoku has significantly grown to specialize in structured wovens and performance fabrics like double faced cotton, poly-blends, stretch and satin finishes. These properties create a nice, comfortable hand which has been purchased by companies like Club Monaco, Express, Chicos, and White House Black Market in the past.

photo via Prints of Orange

At Indigo we would like to mention an outstanding company that we came across called Prints of Orange. This textile design studio is based in Connecticut and represents numerous designers from around the globe that delivers a range of original and trend driven designs for the fashion, home furnishings, accessories and paper goods industries.

From paint splatters, smudges, butterflies, and watercolor themes in light pastels to geometric hand printed florals in white, blue, or black, the designs from Prints of Orange all reflected a shift towards artistic, abstract notions. Digital influences continued by altering hand painted prints and realistic knitwear designs. Overall, lines were super fine and mirrored effects, specifically in embroidered prints stood out. However, the most popular prints were contrasted against white backgrounds.

Next on our trade show circuit was of course the most innovative denim and sportswear fabric show, The Kingpins Show. While Kingpins continues to expand globally by adding Amsterdam to its roster in May, the show has maintained its neighborly, intimate setting that we've all grown to love.

The Kingpins tradeshow was held in a great space called the Tunnel and despite a major snowstorm, the show was absolutely packed. The interior was made up of brick walls and unlike past seasons, the whole exhibition was on one floor. We loved the presentation in the entrance where various denim pieces were on display. This year, the invite-only Kingpins show celebrated 9.5 years and the exhibitors and buyers were just as excited to be a part of it as ever.

At Invista, we discussed the importance of merging activewear and fashion. Pioneers like Nike and Adidas are now integrating technical qualities into denim to give it more diverse value. This performance denim now has Thermolite ® to keep the wearer dry and warm during cold weather, Coolmax ® to keep you cool and dry,  and Toughmax ™ which withstands the rigor of every day active life in a normal weight. And, by adding Lycra, it creates extra comfort.

While visiting Cotton Inc, we were walked through their various products, one we would like to mention specifically called storm denim.  This new innovation combines performance with design in a woven fabric and also offers breathable water repellent protection.

We also had an interesting conversation with Armin Sachathrep, Director of AMC, who along with Viresh Varma from ADL/Arvind confirmed that Coolmax is not yet perfected like its counterpart heat tech. Coolmax still has too much of a polyester feeling. According to Varma, a lot of customers are showing interest in this performance technology in denim but since the hand is not very soft yet buyers really aren't going for it.

Kurabo Denim carries premium denim from Japan and offers performance denim that creates warmth called Thermal (81% Cotton, 11% Acrylic, 7%Cupra, 1% Spandex). For cold fibers, they use Xylithol a natural chemical, used in chewing gum. With a mill in China and a spinning mill in Thailand, they are able to provide premium denim at a more competitive price point.

Our final stop was Texworld where exhibitors were extremely happy to see a steady flow of buyers especially since the weather was much less harsh on the second day! Overall, the trade shows this week were much slower than usual due to the polar vortex conditions.

Of course we headed to the trend forum first. The set up was very well done and the fabrics were organized by color schemes, which was very refreshing. The themes for each trend were well illustrated and created an easily read story. Pretty much all of what we saw overlapped with PV and further confirmed our S/S 2015 predictions.

With a drastic increase in fashion performance functionality in the last 4 years, Hyperbola is committed to outdoor, fashion, and casual fabrics. Their 3D embossed foam fabric is doing really well in the activewear arena because it's all about combining fashion and function to address the unpredictable weather patterns. The performance fabrics they carry are: Anti-bacteria, Anti-UV temperature changing fabrics, really new technical materials that change colours according to heat. For instance, in cold climates, fabrics turn into a grey metallic foil material to protect heat.

Toray is a manufacturer and fabrics sourcing company that has seen athletic wear cross over to fashion apparel and the other way around. Printing on nylon has become a fast growing trend that is becoming very popular for down jackets as well as microfiber products that are soft and lightweight.

From the most technical, high performance fabric qualities to abstract, watercolor inspired prints, and blue hues from dark to light, we are seeing more of a balance between high fashion and activewear influences. Our lives are more demanding than ever and with that, grows a need for fabrications that are durable, weather adapting, and of course, comfortable.
